Most people instinctively offer help and support for those who are under stress and seemingly have problems with coping with it. We try to solve the problems for others and get rid of stress-induced problems that haunt others. The problem is that all too often we only make others angrier and feel more miserable. One simply has to know how to really help before trying to do it.
Always remember that helping stress-affected people is not some short-time contract. You will have to meet them, talk to them and go out with them for weeks or even months. A single heart-to-heart talk is not enough – only long-term stable relationship is able to give stressed people what they really need – safety and company.
Another thing you have to do is making sure that the stressed out person has something to do (other than worrying). Inviting for a dinner, playing console games or even MMORPG may take one’s attention from problems and let them relax a bit. Remember also that the more stressed out person moves, the better.
Help your stress-affected friends when only you are asked for – and sometimes even without being asked. The major problem of long-term stress is that it reduces the ability to find solutions to the problems, even those that are easily solved by others. This is a temporary things, born from weariness and depression, but it means that those people do need your help. You have to be prepared to give them a hand anytime they ask for it and in many situations when they do not ask.
It is extremely easy to overlook other people’s problems. We often ignore the first signs of stress. We don’t bother with trying to find out true reasons for our friend’s abnormal behaviour: pushing away others, getting annoyed for little or no reason, suffering insomnia or leaving their work. All of that are the signs of stress-induced problems and depression.
Just remember: you have to be a good friend and help the others to overcome their problems, or just support them during the hard times. You don’t have to solve their problems – you just need to be there for them. It is the best way for helping others cope with stress and depression.
