Competitive Athletics Are A Great Way to Stay in Shape

Team sports can help keep you fit
When many people think of working out their mind immediately jumps to time spent jogging outside or hitting the weights. Exercise does not require any specific activity or goal other than getting your heart rate up. Hoe you choose to do that is completely up to you. One fitness option that some people sometimes overlook as they age is competitive athletics. Whether you join an informal weekly basketball game or a more formal touch football league, team sports can be a great way top stay motivated and maintain your fitness program.
What are the fitness benefits of team sports?
Staying Motivated
Engaging in team sports is a great way to maintain a high level of fitness and have fun at the same time. Whatever the sport; basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, football, or any other sport the team dynamic can help you maintain your routine. Some people enjoy more solitary pursuits such as running or biking. While this approach is certianly successful for some others may have difficultly maintaining a fitness regimen themselves. For these people the team atmosphere may be helpful in staying motivated. Skipping a 5 mile run you planned on the weekend is easier than bailing on your teammates who are counting on you to play guard during the game on Saturday.
Staying Fit
When you begin any routine chances are you will make performance gains quickly and easily before leveling off. If you begin jogging you may see your 12 minute miles quickly becoming 9 or 10 minute miles but then getting down to 8 minute miles is a different story entirely. This is entirely normal as most people are not inclined to push themselves if they do not have a specific fitness goal. Competitive sports include their own form of motivation that works for some people, competittion. Going for your weekly job its unlikely you are going to run as fast as you can to cut every last second you can off your run. But chasing someone down in a flag football league is entirely different. By adding a competitive element to your fitness plan you provide the motivation to work harder, getting you in better shape faster.
Its Fun!
For many people playing team sports is just plain fun. If an hour on the treadmill staring at the wall or a soundless TV at the gym may not have you excited for your workout maybe game day will. If you found yourself counting the seconds on the treadmill you might find a couple hours of ultimate frisbee just fly by. Just like when you were a care free kid shooting hoops or kicking the soccer ball, team sports can be a blast to play. If that is not enough there is also the post game drinks you more than earned by helping out the team!
